Why we built this

Every lawyer has a handful of repetitive tasks that eat their week — a client intake that lives in email, a tracker that lives in a spreadsheet, a document that gets rebuilt from scratch every time. The software that would fix these problems is rarely worth a custom development budget, so it never gets built.

BuildLegal changes that. You describe the tool you need in plain English, we ask the questions a thoughtful colleague would, and then we build it — with document handling, intake forms, and legal-specific logic already wired in.

What we believe

Lawyers understand their own work better than any outside developer ever could. Given the right tools, they are the people best positioned to build the software their practice needs. Our job is to remove the technical barrier so that legal judgment — not coding ability — is the only thing standing between an idea and a working tool.

We also believe the lawyer should stay in the loop. The tools you build here are meant to support your practice, with you reviewing the work — the way you would review an associate’s draft.

The missing link is education

The technology to build legal software has never been more accessible — but access isn’t the bottleneck anymore. Understanding is. The missing link, right now, is education: most lawyers have never been shown what these tools can actually do, or given the space to find out for themselves.

We are unapologetic fans of education, because lawyers are some of the sharpest people we know. Give a lawyer a clear explanation and a tool to experiment with, and they will run circles around what anyone expected. Our goal is to empower that — to hand smart people the keys and get out of the way.

And the best way to learn these tools is to play with them. Not a lecture, not a certification — just building something small, breaking it, and building it again. That hands-on tinkering is where real understanding comes from, and it’s exactly what BuildLegal is designed to make easy.

Who it’s for

Solo practitioners, small firms, and anyone who has thought “there should just be a tool for this” and never had the time or budget to make one. No coding experience required.
